Foldable Wombs

by Jordan McGhee

She begins to fold the freshly printed paper one half at a time.

With each fold she can no longer remember what it originally looked like.

When her lines begin to explore undesignated areas…

She doesn’t grab another piece but creates a petal.

She guides the flaps to the center then unfolds them countless times.

When her hand begins to cramp, the paper slips between her flesh leaving a stain.

She wipes the stain unto her crisp white shirt and readjusts the paper.

Corner to corner

Side to side

A leg

A wing

A neck

Begin to form.

In her palm lays a crane.

A crane she’ll never be able to replicate,

A crane she has no intention of replicating.
