Hazel Eyes

by Dannica Mitchell

You left me.

How could you leave me?

I have your beautiful hazel eyes,

soft green with brown near my pupils.

Every time someone says, “You have such wonderful eyes,”

I think of you.

I think about how you left me,

how you looked at your baby girl,

and walked through that door.

You never looked back,

never called,

never asked how I was doing.

Now you walk through that door again,

put a bandage on the wound you left on my heart,

but I turn away.

These hazel eyes don’t think of you anymore, Father.

These beautiful hazel eyes can see the man my mother came to love.

He’s got the same eyes,

a man who has always loved me like his own.

The one who adopted me and kept me safe.

I have his beautiful hazel eyes, not yours,

the one who walked through that door.
