Pieces of My Heart

by Alyson Miller

Where do our loved ones go,

when they were ripped from our arms?

Did they take a piece of our hearts with them?

It sure feels like it.

I feel them all around

From the music in my ears,

To the invisible hug when Iā€™m crying alone.

It brings me warmth on the coldest of days.

 All around me,

I feel their presence

in rooms full of strangers and

even ones that are empty.

Those moments when I used to hold them close...

now I wish that I chose to hold on even tighter...

Longer.

Feeling my arms around them one more time.

In the memories that are attached

to those who were taken from me

I feel joy in

remembering that they were once by my side.
