Shabbat Afternoon 3 Years Ago

by Annie Elizabeth Kreiser

It moves through us like waves

We can hardly open our eyes

Catch our breath

Our shoulders shake from the force of it

Its sound

bubbles up from our mouths

And then it stills

Our shoulders sink a little

Our eyes meet for one moment

And we could take a deep breath

Lower our eyes, let the stillness

Fall over us like a top sheet

But our smiles haven’t faded

My eye glints back at me in yours

And we lose ourselves

All over again in the waves
