the key

by Alyson Miller

On the ledge; feeling stuck

The sun slowly begins to fade.

It would be just my luck

To see this beautiful cascade

As it falls all around me

In a rainbow of waves.

A Discovery has been made—

The key is hidden in the cave.

It is hidden within my heart.

Who would have known

Happiness goes beyond smarts

Like Picasso and Austen have shown.

Yet we don’t see it in ourselves,

As we go to jump off the shelf.
