Us

by Julia LaBarre

The sun

rises

light coming into the white teepee.

The buffalo skins stretching over wooden poles,

providing protection.

I slip my moccasins on,

braid my hair,

place a

feather at the base.

When we first encountered them—

blue eyes piercing—

our beautiful, deep black hair was cut short.

I hop on my horse,

                 spear in hand.
